course information

Here's what you need to know

Course aims

Our Fire Door Awareness course provides the knowledge needed to understand the role of fire doors and carry out effective routine fire door checks, including the checks required under Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022.

You’ll learn how fire doors protect people and buildings, the key legal requirements surrounding fire door safety, and how to recognise common defects, damage and misuse. The course covers the main components of a fire door, what to look for during a routine check, how to record your findings and when an issue should be escalated for further assessment.

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to
  • Explain the principles of fire safety
  • Explain the role of fire doors in preventing the spread of fire and smoke within buildings.
  • Carry out simple, structured fire door checks confidently within the limits of your role.

Who is it for?

This online fire door awareness training is designed for anyone who has responsibility for checking, managing or monitoring fire doors as part of their role.

These individuals might include:
  • Building managers
  • Facilities managers
  • Health and safety professionals
  • Fire safety professionals
  • Maintenance teams and contractors
  • Landlords, housing and property teams
  • Caretakers
It is also ideal for organisations looking to train employees to undertake routine or Regulation 10 fire door checks in residential buildings.

No previous fire door qualifications or specialist technical knowledge are required.

The course focuses on routine fire door checks and awareness, rather than training learners to carry out specialist fire door surveys or make technical assessments of fire resistance.

How is it delivered?

TESTIMONIALS

Hear from our learners...

The course content is excellent, you're learning the legal requirements and how fire actually works and then applying this in a practical, real world, way for the assessments rather than just repeating regulations.

Thus far I have loved the course! It is interesting, in-depth, and has a familiar NCRQ feel that connects real-world situations to practical applications. The team at NSA have done a fantastic job with this course, providing a course that is really needed in the industry. As a experienced fire safety professional and risk assessor, I still found areas to research and learn more about.

I would like to say I think the way the unit one assignments have been designed is perfect. It is not like other exam bodies where you need to give  a textbook answer, it introduces you to real-world scenarios. My job is a senior health and safety consultant and the advice emails that we are required to respond to are like what I do receive in real-life.

Your learning journey

Welcome

This block covers a welcome to the course, academic malpractice policies, and setting the scene of the fire safety landscape in England and Wales.

Block 1 | What is fire?

Explore how fires start, develop, and spread. You’ll learn about the fire tetrahedron, ignition sources, and the stages of fire growth.

Block 2 | What is a fire door?

Discover how fire doors help protect people by limiting the spread of fire and smoke. You’ll explore compartmentation, why fire doors need to be kept in good condition, and the role that routine checks play throughout their life.

Block 3 | Legislation and guidance

Understand the key fire safety laws that apply to fire doors and the responsibilities they create. We’ll look at the role of the Responsible Person, specific requirements for fire door checks, and how standards and guidance support good fire safety practice.

Block 4 | Who can undertake fire door checks?

Learn who can carry out different types of fire door checks and when greater expertise may be needed. We’ll distinguish between everyday observations, routine checks and more detailed specialist inspections, so you understand the limits of your role and when to escalate a concern.

Block 5 | Fire door certification and standards

Explore the lifecycle of a fire door and the role that testing, certification and recognised standards play in providing evidence about its performance. You’ll also learn how to approach older or uncertified doors without assuming that the absence of a label or certificate means there is a problem.

Block 6 | Components of a fire door

Get familiar with the main parts of a fire door, including the leaf, frame, seals, glazing, hinges, self-closing devices and other hardware. You’ll learn what each component does and the common signs of damage, deterioration or alteration to look for during a routine check.

Block 7 | Putting it into practice

Bring everything together by working through the process of a routine fire door check. Using realistic examples, you’ll practise checking a door’s condition and operation, identifying and recording concerns, and recognising when something should be referred for further assessment.

Assessment | Knowledge check

For this course, there one final assessment. The first is completed at the end of the course once all of the learning materials have been covered.

The assessment is a 30-question multiple-choice assessment, and you’ll have 60 minutes to complete it.

It contains a mix of knowledge and short scenario-based questions where you’ll need to apply what you’ve learned. To pass, you’ll need to score at least 80%.

It’s an open-book assessment, so you can refer to your notes — but you’ll find it much easier if you’ve already got the key ideas clear in your mind. With the time limit, there isn’t much room to stop and look everything up, so make sure you’ve spent enough time with the learning materials before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I carry out Regulation 10 fire door checks after this course?

Yes. Fire Door Awareness teaches you how to carry out routine fire door checks, including the checks required under Regulation 10 of the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022. You’ll learn what to look for, how to record your findings and when a concern should be escalated for further assessment.

Regulation 10 applies in England only, but the course is still suitable for anyone checking fire doors elsewhere in the UK.

Is this a fire door inspector qualification?

No. Fire Door Awareness is an awareness-level CPD course for routine fire door checks. It does not train you to carry out specialist fire door surveys or to make technical assessments of fire resistance. If you want to carry out detailed inspections for clients or develop as a fire door inspector, our Fire Door Inspection course is the right choice.

Do I need previous experience?

No. You don’t need any previous fire door qualifications or specialist technical knowledge. The course starts with the basics of fire and fire spread, then builds step by step to carrying out a routine fire door check yourself.

What is the difference between Fire Door Awareness and Fire Door Inspection?

Fire Door Awareness teaches you to carry out routine checks, recognise common problems, record what you find and escalate concerns. Fire Door Inspection goes further, into detailed inspection and technical judgement. Awareness suits housing officers, facilities managers, caretakers, landlords, maintenance teams and Responsible Persons. Inspection is for people who carry out detailed fire door inspections as a significant or professional part of their role.

How long does the Fire Door Awareness course take?

Most learners complete the course in 4 to 6 hours. It’s fully online and self-directed, so you can split those hours however suits you. You have 6 months from enrolment to finish. The course ends with a 60-minute, 30-question open-book knowledge check, and the pass mark is 80%.

What certificate or CPD evidence do I receive?

When you pass, you receive a digital certificate. The course provides 6 hours of CPD in fire door awareness and routine checks, which you can record as part of your professional development. Hard copy certificates are available on request for a fee.
